There are tons of theories darting all over the internet about the upcoming season of ‘Game of Thrones’. In truth, we know almost nothing, but here are some of the most popular speculations.
Game of Thrones is set to return on July 16 with less episodes than past seasons, but promises to be the biggest season yet. We’ve seen one preview trailer and a couple behind the scenes featurettes so far. That Stark family photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly is probably the happiest we will see them for quite some time.
When we left off with Westeros the big three leaders had made some big moves: Jon Snow had been deemed King of the North, Cersei Lannister maneuvered herself onto the Iron Throne, and Daenerys finally set sail with her massive army and dragons.
The real war is between the living and the dead.
Beyond all this squabbling for the various thrones and kingdoms is the Wall to the north and beyond that are the White Walkers and their army of undead zombies. It was said by the reanimated Benjen Stark in this past season’s finale that there is magic in the Wall that prevents undead from moving past it. This implies to me that at some point, possibly this season, we will see the Wall come tumbling down.
The Night’s Watch is barely an army at this point and I imagine they will offer little resistance when the Night King and his army of White Walkers come knocking. All of the back-stabbing and manipulations that Game of Thrones is famous for will mean nothing when this army of ice and dead actually enter the fray. It will all about survival then. I feel like they will save that for finale of Season 7. It would be a hell of a finale to see the Night King bring down the Wall and march on Winterfell.
Everyone is talking about a little dagger.
We’ve seen in a couple different promotional or set photos that Arya Stark will come into possession of a new little weapon. It is a fancy looking dagger that is supposedly the same weapon from way back in Season 1 that was used by an assassin to try to kill Bran Stark. The assassination attempt was blamed on Tyrion Lannister, but it was clearly ordered by another Lannister. More importantly, the dagger is said to be made of Valyrian steel. There have been only two weapons proven effective against White Walkers; Valyrian steel and Dragon Glass.
So far, there are only a handful of Valyrian steel weapons in the hands of the swordsmen and women of Westeros. Currently, Jon Snow, Brienne of Tarth, Jamie Lannister, and Samwell Tarly are the only ones known to possess various named Valyrian steel swords. I know there are ton more present in the books, but many of them have yet to be mentioned in the actual series so who knows how many there actually are. I have the feeling that all those Valyrian steel swords and Dragon Glass will end up being pretty important. I mean Daenerys is on her way and bringing those dragons. I’m guessing they can make more Dragon Glass for the fight against the White Walkers.
There’s still fun to be had.
One of the best things about Game of Thrones, other than all the dragons and battles, has been getting to see so many wonderful characters interact with each other. Behind the scenes photos have revealed that it is likely that Brienne of Tarth and Lyanna Mormont are set to share at least one scene this season. That is a pair up I’m excited to see. Also, the prospect of seeing all the remaining Starks finally reunited is kind of everything I want from this next season.
We still know so little and have so many questions. Who will finally take down Cersei? Will Sansa be persuaded by Littlefinger to betray Jon? Will Tormund get to see Brienne again? Will Jon Snow meet Daenerys? Will her dragon, Drogon meet his direwolf, Ghost? Also, I really want to see a dragon fight a White Walker, can we make that happen?
Game of Thrones is set to premiere its seventh season on July 16 on HBO and airs on Sunday nights, be sure to tune in!
