The First Reviews For Arrested Development Season 5 Are In…

The first reviews are in for the most recent season of Arrested Development, dropping next Tuesday May 29th on Netflix.

At the time of this writing, Arrested Development Season 5 sits at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, but with only 11 reviews in total.

In comparison, the past seasons of Arrested Development break down like this:

Season 1 – 100%

Season 2 – 94%

Season 3 – 89%

Season 4 – 79%

Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences – 20%

So, 73% isn’t great, but this percentage could rise, or drop, quite a bit with only a few reviews in so far.

The overall reaction is that Arrested Development is back in its familiar form, recapturing most of the cast’s chemistry and comedic brilliance, but it doesn’t live up to earlier seasons. Here are a few of the highlights from the reviews found on Rotten Tomatoes:

Ben Travers from IndieWire writes:

“With the cast reunited and a better understanding of what made the characters lovable lunkheads to begin with, the new season can be effortlessly enjoyable; a pleasure to watch instead of something you have to dig through to find the parts you love.”

On the other hand, Chris Evangelista at /Film summed it up thusly:

“They’ve made a huge mistake.”

Vanity Fair’s Sonia Saraiya said:

“It’s such a relief. Arrested Development is fascinating even when it’s not funny, but Season 5 is funny-not as funny as the show was in its heyday, but the magic is there, and more clearly visible than in Season 4.”

Hey, I just want some-half decent Arrested Development. No show can ever touch the peak of those first two seasons.

Kyle Ryan at AV Club agreed, writing:

Arrested Development feels like its old self again. More important, season five is funny, and gets funnier as it proceeds.”

Unfortunately, Allison Keene at Collider also had some disparaging remarks:

“It’s never a waste to follow the stories of these characters, but the experience is becoming increasingly hollow.”

Well, that’s just a sample of the few reviews already out, but more are surely to come. Until then, I have complete faith in my favorite series, of which I have loved every season.

On May 29th, I am going to marathon the entire half-season, which is far less episodes than when I watched all Season 4 episodes in one day. Then I’ll have the review for you, from one of the world’s most passionate Arrested Development fans. Then we’ll see who has made a huge mistake…
